How Grease Guns Are Different From Other Tools
Most pneumatic grease guns operate on a similar principle: They use compressed air to apply pressure in the tank and push grease out of the nozzle directly where you need to lubricate.
This works when compressed air enters the upper part of the gun and moves through an air chamber, which will then trigger the piston to move back and forth automatically. This action drives the plunger pump that is connected to the valves controlling the flow of grease. When the plunger goes up, the valve seals to prevent backflow and direct the grease to the nozzle of the gun. With a simple press on the trigger, you can release a stream of grease.
What makes this tool stand out is its air-powered mechanism that allows for high-pressure grease delivery, ideal for large-scale lubrication tasks. The nozzle of the grease guns also ensures precise application of oil, ensuring that the lubrication wouldn’t be wasted or spilled.
What Should You Consider When Purchasing Grease Guns?
Before purchasing a grease gun, make sure to consider the following beforehand:
Grease Gun Pressure
An average grease gun is designed to deliver anywhere from 2,000 to 15,000 psi. Before using it, make sure to check your device’s threshold capacity and avoid exceeding the maximum level to prevent damage to the bearing seals.
Cartridge Capacity
The cartridge capacity indicates the amount of lubrication your device can provide before the cartridge needs to be refilled. Typically measured in ounces or grams, such capacity affects how often the tool needs to be reloaded.
Output
Most grease guns can provide an output of 35 strokes per ounce. Make sure to double-check the model you’re eyeing to avoid over-greasing, which can cause damage to seals and motor windings, start environmental issues, and create fluid friction.
