Boost Your Productivity by Getting the Best Pumps for Your Operations

A progressive cavity pump is ideal for transferring thick substances over extended distances. This is especially true for liquids with high viscosities that operate at discharge pressures of up to 48 bar. In addition, these devices are available in specialized versions suitable for hygienic environments and drum-emptying tasks.

How Progressive Cavity Pumps Are Different From Other Models

Progressive cavity pumps, or PC pumps, are positive displacement pumps that transfer viscous fluids or materials. They operate on a unique principle of displacement through a helical rotor and stator design.

The pump has two primary components: a single helical rotor and a double helical stator. The rotor is a helical screw-shaped spindle, while the stator is a double helix-shaped cavity surrounding the rotor. As the rotor rotates eccentrically within the stator, spaces are formed between the rotor and stator, gradually progressing from the suction side to the discharge side.

During operation, the pumped fluid is trapped in these cavities and progressively travels from the suction end to the discharge end due to rotational motion. This action creates a continuous, non-pulsating flow, ideal for handling highly viscous or shear-sensitive fluids. By managing the speed of the rotor, the device can regulate the flow rate and generate high pressures while maintaining gentle handling of the pumped medium.

What Should You Consider When Buying Progressive
Cavity Pumps?

Before purchasing a progressive cavity pump, make sure to double-check the following model specifications:

Minimum and Maximum RPM

The rotations per minute (RPM) range determines a pump’s flow rate and pressure capabilities. Higher RPMs generally result in increased flow rates, while lower RPMs offer higher pressure outputs. Understanding the desired application requirements and the fluid characteristics will help determine the suitable RPM range to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.

Maximum Viscosity

Viscosity refers to a fluid’s resistance to flow. Progressive cavity pumps excel in handling highly viscous liquids, but each pump has a limit. It is essential to consider the maximum viscosity specification to ensure that the pump can effectively control the fluid. It also prevents clogging or damage and guarantees a consistent flow rate.

Seal Type and Material

Different applications require specific seal types, such as lip seals,  mechanical seals, or gland packing, based on the fluid being pumped and the operating conditions. Always keep in mind that the material of the seals should be compatible with the pumped medium to prevent corrosion, degradation, or contamination.
