As of this writing, the Philippines has recorded more than 14,000 cases of COVID-19. To prevent its spread, the government placed the whole Luzon island under a strict lockdown last March 15. But as more and more people get infected, President Duterte decided to extend the enhanced community quarantine for the third time in Metro Manila.
The latest news had no doubt affected many Filipinos, with some eager to get out of their homes and go back to normal. Unfortunately, everyday life will never go back to “normal.” As long as the virus still exists and the vaccine isn’t created yet, people have to accept a new normal where social distancing and wearing masks is a must.
Everyone plays an important role in defeating this pandemic. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to stay safe amidst COVID-19!
COVID-19 Prevention: 7 Ways to Stay Safe Amidst the Pandemic
1. Wash Your Hands Frequently
One of the most effective ways to prevent the transmission of Coronavirus is to wash your hands regularly.
Make sure you use soap and water to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Do this especially after coughing or sneezing, or being out in a public space.
If you don’t have immediate access to soap and water, you can opt to use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content. Rub the product all over the surfaces of your hands (in between your fingers and under your nails) to eliminate the virus. Make sure to immediately wash your hands if soap and water are already available.
2. Keep Distance from Other People
As much as possible, you should avoid close contact with other sick people, regardless if they’re your family or not.
Follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation to stay at least 6 feet away from people, especially those exhibiting symptoms of the virus. Always remember that people can spread the virus through simple droplets in the air even if they show symptoms or not.
Avoid mass gatherings as well as crowded places in order to avoid COVID-19.
3. Stay Home
Make sure to obey local public health guidelines to avoid exposure to the Coronavirus. This includes staying at home and avoiding non-essential travel.
If you can, work from home in order to limit contact with sick individuals and other people at risk such as the elderly or unwell.
For those with mild symptoms of COVID-19, it’s very important to self-isolate and avoid contact with anyone, even if they’re part of your family. Stay inside and rest. If you decide to go to the hospital, call ahead first to ensure they can accommodate you.
4. Cover Your Mouth and Nose
You should cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or a mask whenever you have to go out in public. Even if you do not feel sick, you can unknowingly spread the virus to others. It’s better to be safe than sorry later on.
With that said, do not use a facemask meant for a health worker. The supply for personal protective equipment (PPEs) has been limited lately. Use a DIY face cover instead.
For those who don’t have a mask and need to cough or sneeze, you can cover your face using a tissue or the inside of your elbow. Don’t forget to properly dispose of the tissues and wash your hands after.
5. Avoid Touching Your Face
Always remember that your hands come into contact with several surfaces throughout the day and they may pick up viruses along the way.
As such, it’s best to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands, especially if they are dirty or unwashed. Doing so will help prevent the spread of germs and reduce the chances of you getting COVID-19.
Again, don’t forget to wash your hands to kill the virus!
6. Clean Shared Surfaces Daily
The Coronavirus not only stays inside your body but it also lingers in surfaces around your home.
Make sure to clean and disinfect all surfaces that people touch regularly, including door handles, light switches, tables, and even phones. You can do this by soaking a cloth with water and detergent then rubbing the surfaces clean. After, you can use a disinfectant spray to kill the virus.
If possible, wear reusable or disposable gloves while cleaning to further protect yourself from COVID-19.
7. Sanitize Your Environment
For further protection, you have to maintain a well sanitized environment. There are machines available for residential and commercial use. However, you have to ensure that you’ll make the right choice.
Compresstech offers an air fogger which helps in eliminating harmful viruses like Coronavirus. Unlike mist sprays, air foggers release concentrated droplets that completely disinfect surfaces. With this machine, you can have the peace of mind that your environment is free from infection causing viruses.
It’s understandable that people want to go out and return back to their normal lives. But until a vaccine for COVID-19 is developed, everyone needs to do their part in order to prevent its spread. Always keep these 7 tips in mind to protect yourself and your loved ones from the Coronavirus.
